We began our "family tree project" by hanging a photo of each family in our classroom. It really personalized our space, and broadened our Kindergarten community! We read several stories about families, and started thinking about how families are unique. One of our stories lead to a discussion about "What is a family tree?"
We decided to create our own family tree based on the family photos in our classroom. The students outlined and sponge-painted their own autumn trees. Our next step was to add our family members to the tree. To figure out how many family members we all have, we built a family tower with blocks! Each block represented one family member. We compared towers with our friends, who's family is larger/smaller?
Thinking carefully about the members of our family; What colour hair do they have? Is it long or short? What colour are their eyes? Further discussion at home: We briefly discussed great-grandparents. Who are our great-grandparents? Where do/did they live? Who are other extended members of our family? |
